One cause of this lack of awareness is the advertisements used by the tobacco corporations. Between the years of 1988 and 1993, the tobacco industry doubled it's spending in advertisements. By 1997, the tobacco industry's spending on advertisements exceeded $15 million per day. Although there as been recent pushes to increase the public awareness of the harmful effects of smoking, public organizations will never be able to match the spending power of the tobacco industry.

Moving on, let's get into the details behind smoking and it's adverse effects. For one, nicotine has been studied and is known to be addictive. If you've watched the movie, The Insider, you would know that the tobacco industry tried to keep this secret. However, the truth is ugly, and the fact remains, nicotine is addictive. Second, cigarettes contain over 4000 chemicals which are damaging to your body. Combined with it's addictive tendencies, smoking is a sure fire way to slowly kill yourself. Smoking not only harms your own body but the bodies of others around you, especially your family. Second hand smoke is a leading cause of asthma in children and studies have shown that second hand smoke leads to more teenage smoking.
